RIVER FALLS (WKOW) -- People in the Eau Claire area are coming together to remember the three girls who were killed by their father last year.

1,300 people participated in the Tri-Angels 5K run-walk Saturday, to support the girls and their mother Jessica Schaffhausen.

Jessica hopes to build a playground in memory of her daughters; Amara, 11, Sophie, 8, and Cecilia, 5.

"Initially, when the girls first died, there was a lot of, kind of how I saw it as, energy," says Jessica. "People just wanted to do something, they wanted to make it better and you know, of course, there's no way I can get my girls back, but we can take and funnel all that energy towards making this world a better place."

Two high school students who wanted to help raise money organized the 5K. The event raised nearly $50,000 for the playground project.

Aaron Schaffhausen was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his daughters earlier this week.
