Officials say statewide database could help unsolved murder cases

MADISON (WKOW) -- An investigation finds the state of Wisconsin has no comprehensive listing of unsolved murders.

Gannett Wisconsin Media reviewed records finding at least 282 unsolved homicides between 2003 and 2012. Looking back to 1953, there are nearly 400 and possibly higher.

Lt. Wayne Smith with Columbia County Sheriff's Office says having a database could generate tips and leads. Smith served as president of the Wisconsin Association of Homicide Investigators.

Authorities say institutional barriers and disparities between agencies involved in cases have stood in the way of establishing a database.
