Temp hires on the rise in Wisconsin

Eau Claire (WQOW)- An economic trend is catching our eye.  The hiring of temporary workers across the country is growing at a 40-percent clip; ten times that of permanent hires.

"Hiring is ramping up," says Dan Lytle with the Eau Claire Job Center.

But nationally, employer confidence is still low.   That's been shown in a reluctance to add full-time, permanent employees in favor of hiring temporary workers.

"They are going to go ahead and outsource that hiring, pay an extra mark-up on the wages so they can reduce their liability when it comes to workers compensation, unemployment insurance," Lytle explains.  "It's a good way for employers to avoid some of the hidden costs of hiring that way."

"It was a good opportunity for me just to start working right away and getting paid right away," points out Hugh Durning, a temporary worker who found a job in Eau Claire.

Manpower in Eau Claire estimates that more than half of the jobs it connects people with are temporary ones.

"A lot of times companies use us as their staffing arm or their business partner to help them get a high volume of employees in a short period of time," says Manpower Regional Business Development Manager Deidre Garrett.

And unlike some temp agencies, workers who get a job through Manpower do receive benefits.

"We provide vacation, holiday pay, medical, dental and we obviously cover worker's compensation," explains Garrett.  "So we cover all of that for the employee."

The term temp has always had somewhat of a negative connotation.

"I would definitely say the reputation of the word temporary worker has definitely changed over time," Garrett responds.

"What employers are doing is they are using staffing, temporary work assignments as a tryout," Lytle says.  "It's an opportunity for someone to get their foot in the door and then for them to show their stuff on the floor and then an employer to say they are valuable to us.  Here's a track record of why.  Let's get this person on permanently."

And the growth in temporary jobs can be seen all over Wisconsin.

"In the Eau Claire MSA, staffing or employee leasing is actually in the top five industries of growth and it is projected to be growing all the way out to 2018," explains Lytle.

It's actually the number two fastest growing industry in the state; right behind medical jobs and it's projected to increase by 20-percent in the next five years.

"It's definitely taken the pressure off my job search so actually I can look for something that is more satisfying full-time," Durning admits.

Customer service and manufacturing are two of the industries seeing a lot of temporary hires.  The average salary for a temp job in Wisconsin is $27,000.
