Who could face Scott Walker in race for Governor in 2014

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The 2014 election for governor is more than 16 months away, but there is already a lot of speculation about who will challenge Governor Scott Walker.

The state's former Commerce Secretary and current Madison School Board member, Mary Burke, is one of the big names being thrown out there to be a potential Democratic candidate in the election. Burke has not declared her candidacy or created a campaign committee, but she has not denied the possibility for a run in 2014.

"I think a lot of people are pretty excited about her, because she is a new name basically, someone who could self-fund her campaign, it always helps," Dr. David Canon, a UW-Madison Political Science Professor. "Like Ron Johnson did in the Senate side for the Republicans, you know Mary Burke could bring that to the table for the Democrats, being able to put several million of her own money into the campaign."

Canon says Burke doesn't have the name recognition, but she has the fundraising ability, which he says is necessary for any Democrat that hopes to run against Gov. Walker.

Canon says a couple names that are being floated around as other potential Democratic candidates are Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca or State Senator Jon Erpenbach.
