MADISON (WKOW) -- Democratic state Rep. Penny Bernard Schaber is challenging Republican Senate President Mike Ellis for the seat he has held in the Wisconsin state Senate since 1982.
Shaber, of Appleton, announced her campaign challenging Ellis on Tuesday. It marks the first time Ellis has had a Democratic opponent since 1998, when he won by a more than 2-to-1 margin. Ellis has been uncontested the three previous elections.
Ellis, of Neenah, has the second longest tenure of any state senator, with 31 years' experience. He also served 12 years in the Assembly before being elected to the Senate.
Schaber was first elected to the Assembly in 2008.
Ellis is one of the Senate's most powerful members. He played a key role in negotiating compromises with Gov. Scott Walker on voucher school expansion.
