Suspect flees campus police, also wanted in hit and run

MADISON (WKOW) -- UW Madison Police(UWPD) say a Verona man refused to pull over and started a police pursuit on campus overnight Tuesday.

a campus police spokesperson says officers tried to stop Neil Veitch, 22, near Randall Avenue and Dayton Street after they saw him driving erratically. Veitch then quickly accelerated, starting a pursuit across campus that included high speeds on the lakeshore path. Veitch eventually crashed into a light pole on Campus Drive, then fled on foot, before officers caught him and took him into custody.

Veitch had minor injuries from the crash and is was in UW Hospital Wednesday morning. A UWPD officer was also injured, treated at UW Hospital and released.

Police say officers and a police dog found various drugs in Veitch's vehicle, believed to be mushrooms, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine.

Police also determined Veitch was involved in a hit and run in the City of Madison earlier Tuesday evening, and Madison officers had been trying to find him.

Once released from the hospital, Veitch will be booked into the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of OWI, evading/eluding police, possession with intent to deliver, and other charges.
