35 to be laid off from Virent in Madison


MADISON (WKOW) -- Virent, Inc. plans to lay off 35 people in Madison.

In a letter to the state Department of Workforce Development, Virent President and CEO Lee Edwards said the layoffs will begin September 23. They affect workers at the company's facility at 3571 Anderson Street.

Edwards said the company is restructuring as it transitions to an increased focus on the commercialization of its technology.

Virent makes biofuels. According to its website, Virent says it has 130 employees in Madison.
