Frac sand company's request for a waiver denied

Posted:

Buffalo County (WQOW) - A frac sand company's request for more time has been denied.

River Valley Sands had asked Buffalo County for a waiver which would delay a decision on its application.  The company wants to mine sand in the Town of Dover.  That's along Highway 121.  The Buffalo County Board of Adjustment has the final say on a permit, but recently, the Town of Dover sent a letter to the county, recommending the permit be rejected.

River Valley Sands wanted more time to address the town's concerns before the county considers its permit, but on Tuesday, a zoning committee denied the request.  The committee scheduled the next meeting for August 14th.  The company's permit application will be reviewed at that time.

Buffalo County (WQOW) - A frac sand company is hoping to buy more time.  River Valley Sands is asking Buffalo County to delay a decision on its application.

The company wants to mine sand in the Town of Dover.  That's along Highway 121.  The Buffalo County Board of Adjustment has the final say on a permit, but recently the Town of Dover sent a letter to the county, recommending it be denied.

The town board spelled out its concerns in that letter.  For example, the board said residents are worried about dust control and exposure to crystalline silica.  The board said, "Since there have not been many studies done in recent years and since this is a new industry to Buffalo County, the residents in the Town of Dover expressed concern about being lab rats..."

River Valley Sands said in its letter to the county, "...there must have been meetings where incorrect information was presented.  We need to correct and clarify this information at an open meeting with them before this misinformation goes any further."

The company wants to address the town's concerns before the county considers its permit.  The request from River Valley Sands will be taken up at a zoning committee meeting Tuesday.
