MADISON (WKOW) -- The family of an airman killed in Afghanistan honors him by helping children.
Senior Airman Daniel Johnson was only stationed in Afghanistan a short time when he saved the life of an Afghan soldier. His unit had come under attack and the soldier was critically wounded. SrA Johnson administered life-saving techniques to save the soldier's life.
SrA Johnson worked to diffuse bombs, mostly improvised explosives devices, or IEDs. Two days after he saved the Afghan soldier's life, a hidden IED was triggered and exploded, killing Johnson.
Johnson was a volunteer with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and an avid rock climber. His family is raising money to build a climbing wall at Phantom Ranch in Mukwonago, a youth camp where he worked for many years.
The Daniel Johnson Memorial Golf Classic is August 26 at Geneva National Golf Club in Lake Geneva. The Johnson family is looking for golfers, sponsors or people just to attend the dinner and silent auction. To learn more, head to this website.
