Badger football position battles fresh at QB and WR

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Badger football team held its second practice of fall camp Tuesday, and it doesn't appear there will be an answer on who will be the starting quarterback anytime soon. As of now, it appears Curt Phillips and Joel Stave are 1a and 1b, with transfer Tanner McEvoy being the wildcard. Each of the three bring a unique ability to the field. Phillips relies much more on his knowledge and experience after three knee surgeries, Stave may have the best arm of the group, while McEvoy is believed to have the biggest upside athletically. The newcomer doesn't seem to lack for confidence either.

"I feel like I can do anything," McEvoy said Tuesday. "I feel like I can be a drop back passer or I feel like I can hand the ball off to the great running game that we have and I feel like I can run the zone read and scramble around a bit. I mean if I just learn each thing each day which I already have an idea for and just go out there and execute it on the field I should be alright."

For Phillips, fighting for the starting job is anything but new. "It's frustrating having to earn your keep three years in a row now but at the same time now it's exciting," Phillips said. "Every year I've been here we've been in a quarterback competition so I'm used to it. I think the biggest thing is not looking over your shoulder and making the most of the reps you get."

There's also a battle going on at the wide receiver position. Senior Jared Abbrederis is once again expected to be the number one option, but the next man up is in question. Sophomore Jordan Fredrick and junior Kenzel Doe are the most experienced receivers back, while many expect freshman Rob Wheelwright to be in the mix for playing time. Head coach Gary Andersen said he's looking for a guy to step up next to Abbrederis, and Doe feels like he can be that guy.

"I try to help the team the best way I can and I feel like I've got the capabilities of being a playmaker and if Coach Andersen wants me to step up I'm just going to have to do it," Doe said.

"All we have to do is come out here and catch balls and Coach Andersen will put the best guy out there."
