iPhones use as much energy as a refrigerator yearly

Eau Claire (WQOW) - iPhone users might want to power down once in awhile.

A new study says iPhones use as much energy as your refrigerator.

There are a ton of ways to stay connected these days thanks to smartphones, laptops, tablets and digital TV but all those devices require a lot of energy.

A medium-sized, energy star fridge uses 322 kilowatts each year. The average iPhone uses 361.   That includes the wi-fi connection, data usage and battery charging.

It's all from a new study by the Digital Power Group. And it's not just smartphones. Add up all the new technology we have, and it uses about 10 percent of the world's energy pie.
