Cornfest carries on despite rough growing season

Eau Claire (WQOW) - A tough start to the growing season wasn't going to stop people from enjoying all the corn their stomachs could handle at this year's Cornfest in Eau Claire.

The 5th annual event is a fundraiser for the Westgate Sportsman's Club. For $5 at the door, you can shuck as many ears of sweet corn as you want to eat. The corn is brought in from a local farmer in Fall Creek. But there were some concerns as far as crop production and quality of the corn this year, given the unusually wet spring we experienced in the area.

"One thing we had to do this year is we had to check in with him on a more regular basis just to keep an eye on the corn crop to make sure he was going to have enough for what we were going to get," said Jessica Kohlhepp, a volunteer at the event.

The ears are a little bit smaller this year, but it's still sweet and good," added Kathy Klatt.

Over 1,000 ears of corn were brought in for the event. And if you'd like to go get your hands on some ears of sweet corn, you still have time. The event began at 11:00 a.m. Saturday and is scheduled to last until around midnight.
