Madison Water Utility warns customers of scammers

MADISON (WKOW) -- An outraged customer emailed Madison Water Utility Tuesday morning.

The customer complained about being approached at his near west side property by two MWU workers.  The men had demanded immediate payment of a new water meter surcharge and even pulled a large tool out of their vehicle's trunk and threatened to turn his water off.  The man handed over $250 cash.

As it turns out, the email was then turned over to the Madison Police Department for investigation as the so-called MWU employees actually are not.

According to the victim, the men were driving a white, four-door sedan with an official-looking City of Madison or Madison Water Utility lettering on the side.  He also states they had some lettering or logo on their shirt lapels.

Madison Water Utility reminds customers there is no charge for the new Project H2O metering systems being installed across Madison.  MWU employees always carry photo identification and drive Madison Water Utility vehicles.

Crews in the field never take money directly from customers.  The only payments MWU receives will be online, by mail or in person at their billing office or the City Treasurer's office.

If you are approached by anyone claiming to be with the Water Utility who is demanding money, contact the police immediately.
