MADISON (WKOW) -- A program called "Vest a Dog" provides bullet proof and stab proof vests for K9 officers, but many law enforcement agencies don't have the funds needs to get them.

Madison police officers want to make sure all K9 dogs have access to vests. It may save their life while on the job.

On a regular basis, K9 dogs apprehend dangerous criminals, locate evidence and remove illegal drugs. About 95 percent of all law enforcement agencies and police departments don't have the funds to get bullet proof vests for all their K9 officers.

Madison Police Officer Rose Mansavage and Officer Henry Wilson have bullet proof vests for their K9 dogs. Officer Falko and Officer Boris earned vests this year. Local police departments rely on donations in order to purchase vests for their dogs.

The Madison Police Department has a new training facility for their units. Also, coming up on September 8 you can help local K9 dogs through the "Dog Paddle" event. Dogs and their owners are invited to Goodman Pool in Madison where dogs can swim. Owners can learn more about the K9 police dogs at the event. Click here for more information.
