Clerk accused of stealing thousands in merchandise charged

Eau Claire (WQOW) - A store clerk who learned she was about to be fired is accused of stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise before she left.

Katie Denn of Eau Claire worked at the Mega Holiday on Jeffers Road. Last month, another employee noticed their cigarette inventory was off.

Police say surveillance tapes showed Denn pretending to scan bags full of merchandise. Total value, more than $2,600. Police say she told them she was angry because she had found out she was about to lose her job.

She also allegedly said it was her "way of making a statement." Police say Denn returned the merchandise, but the store said it could not be re-sold. Denn is charged with felony theft.
