Eau Claire, Menomonie (WQOW) -- Both the Blugolds and Blue Devils are searching for starting quarterbacks.
UWEC has been very stable at the QB position in recent years, with Kyle Paulson as the starter from 2006 through 2009, and Austin Neu as the guy from 2010 through last season. Now, there are a number of players in the mix.
"It's always hard when you lose a three-year starter," says UWEC head coach Todd Glaser, "you get comfortable with Austin, he had a great career here, and now we're onto the new chapter, we've got some good young quarterbacks that we're excited about and there's going to be a lot of competition throughout camp to see who's going to be our next quarterback."
The Blugolds begin the season on Saturday, September 7, when UWEC visit defending Division III national runner up St. Thomas.
UW-Stout's quarterback competition has yet to sort itself out, but head coach Clayt Birmingham is confident that someone will rise to the occasion.
"We have some returners coming back from last year and we've got some freshmen as well," Birmingham says, "and some newcomers that's gonna contribute but it's going to be a wide open race for the quarterback."
UW-Stout starts its season on Saturday, September 7, when the Blue Devils host Dakota Wesleyan.
