MADISON (WKOW) -- BadgerNation.com first reported the Wisconsin football team will go with redshirt sophomore Joel Stave as its starting quarterback. A source confirmed the story to 27 News. Stave and Curt Phillips were listed as co-starters on the Badgers depth chart that was released Monday. Coach Gary Andersen said earlier in fall camp that he would not publicly announce a starting quarterback, but he said Monday afternoon that the team's quarterbacks had already been informed on the decision.
"We didn't sit down and send out smoke signals and have a big meeting about it, we just said it is what it is," Andersen said. "And we believe in the direction we're headed with the young men involved. And it's in house, the way we do everything. But the quarterbacks know who is going to play."
Stave started six games for the Badgers in 2012 before breaking his collarbone against Michigan State on October 27. The Badgers open the 2013 season on August 31 at home against UMass.
