MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison police are searching for the suspect in a hit-and-run Tuesday morning that injured a construction worker.

Police say an officer was pursuing a car for speeding in the 200 block of South Whitney Way around 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday. After a short pursuit on Regent Street and then onto Merrill Crest Drive, the driver clipped a male construction worker who was helping pour asphalt. The car then crashed at the intersection of Merrill Crest Drive and Old Middleton Road.

According to police, the driver fled the scene. He is described as black, in his late teens to early 20s, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall with a thin build. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a light-colored t-shirt. Police say he might have lost his shoes.

Police determined the car was stolen following the crash. Officers, along with K-9 units, are searching for the driver.

The construction worker was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
