Site of new parking lot in downtown Eau Claire approved

Eau Claire (WQOW) - You'll soon have more options when it comes to parking your car in downtown Eau Claire.

At its meeting Tuesday night, the city council approved plans for a new parking lot downtown, at the corner of Madison and Forest Streets. Originally proposed last summer as a 79 stall lot, the plan approved just about an hour ago will include 55 stalls. There is still an agreement to work out with Xcel Energy. The company has a substation adjacent to the lot and owns part of the property the lot will sit on. The manager of the downtown farmer's market says more parking is badly needed.

"We probably get two to three thousand visitors on Saturdays, and so parking is hard to find. Especially if someone is carrying big bags of vegetables back to their vehicle, I'm sure they'd appreciate having a closer parking stall," said Deidra Barrickman.

Before a timetable is announced, construction bids will be sought out. The estimated cost is $150,000.
