Badgers still silent on quarterback issue

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Just four days before the season opener, the Badgers are still keeping quiet about who will be the starting quarterback. Joel Stave is expected to take the first snap under center. However, the sophomore politely eluded questions about the subject with a smile on his face.

"I don't know if I'm supposed to reveal that. So, I'm not going to."

Stave did acknowledge that it would mean a lot to him to get the starting nod. The job was his until an injury last October. Then, he endured a coaching change which meant learning a new offense.

"I feel very confident leading this offense. I think we've got a great plan going in to Saturday. I think the guys we have around can really make this offense successful."

One of the guys that may be helping Stave on offense is Tanner McEvoy. The junior college transfer lost out in the quarterback battle. So, the 6'6" sophomore has been taking reps at receiver. Gary Andersen also brought up the possibility of using McEvoy in certain defensive situations. Although, McEvoy does not expect an expansive role on defense.

"It's mostly situational defense. It's not like I'll be out there on first down or doing things like that. I think it's more situational like late in the game type deals."

McEvoy did play receiver and defensive back in high school. He said he would be happy to play either at the collegiate level, although he is still holding out hope of being the Badgers starting quarterback at some point in his career.

"I mean I'm still a quarterback but if it gets me on the field playing receiver or safety or long snapper, whatever the deal is, I'll do whatever. I just want to get out there and help these guys win. That's really the ultimate goal."

The Badgers open the season Saturday at 11 a.m. against UMass.
