Eau Claire (WQOW) -- The UWEC women's volleyball team has been a model of consistency, having made eight straight trips to the NCAA Division III tournament.
The Blugolds have 12 letterwinners back from last year's team, but there are only two seniors on the 2013 roster. UWEC has been picked to finish second in the WIAC, but head coach Kim Wudi doesn't want to dwell on the past.
"You would look at us on paper and say we're a young team," says Wudi, "but I think young means energetic, I think it means a lot of people are going to be fighting for playing time and I think we can definitely capitalize on that. The biggest strength is that this group is all about heart, they are getting after it every day and when they step in the gym it's about business and getting the job done."
"This season's a new season," says UWEC senior libero Lauren Sutherland, "yeah, we were great last year but that was last year, we're really focusing on this season, it doesn't matter how good we were, we gotta come in and be on top this year, be on our 'A' game all the time."
"To be honest I didn't even know we were picked second," says senior outside hitter Kelly Schuh, "I think a lot of it is based off of previous years, and I think that we have a lot of really good freshmen coming in and I'm really excited about that, so I think we definitely have a chance of winning the whole thing."
UWEC starts its season Friday at the St. Benedict (MN) tournament.
