MADISON, WI (WKOW) -- The University of Wisconsin football team has a very young secondary, making it a primary concern for some.
The Badgers have nine defensive backs listed on the two-deep depth chart. Seven of those nine players are freshmen and sophomores.
True freshman Sojourn Shelton is listed as a starter -- the only freshman starting on either side of the ball.
Some have said that inexperience is going to be a problem for the team.
"Every day we come out with a purpose to prove those people wrong, who have the doubts," said Shelton. "I think we're definitely going to get that job done. I'm excited to surprise a lot of people as a secondary as a group, because we truly do have it.
Senior safety Dezmen Southward is helping lead the young group to success.
"I think people should back off a little bit," Southward said. "Give them a chance to play and maybe half way through the season, maybe pass judgment then. It's just premature. You have to give some guys a chance to go out there and be successful before you label them a certain way. I think people will be impressed with what we put out on the field."
The Badgers open the 2013-2014 season at home Saturday against the University of Massachusetts.
