People gather overnight to watch crews install new overpass on the Beltline

MADISON (WKOW) -- A stretch of the Beltline closed overnight and has now been reopened to traffic.

City engineers closed it down until 5:00 a.m. on Thursday to install a new overpass. People were taking pictures and gathering outside the overpass to watch the construction project. About 10 people were out at the construction site taking pictures about 3:00 a.m. on Thursday.

About a 2.5 mile span from Fish Hatchery Road to Verona Road was closed and by 3:00 a.m. traffic was moving eastbound on the Beltline. This overpass will give bikers and pedestrians a safe route between Madison and Fitchburg.

One man spent six hours at the construction site. He says it will be great for the community.

"It's classic Madison. It's a nice touchy feely thing and the bikers and the pedestrians will love it," said Bruce Venzke from Madison. "The bikers especially will really love it."

Besides the overpass itself, workers are also building a one-mile bike trail. They hope to have it finished by the end of September. Next year they'll extend the trail into 4.5 miles and connect it to the network of trails that run throughout Madison.
