Sheriff says jobs may be on the chopping block

The Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department is predicting a budget shortfall of more than $500,000 dollars for next year.

Sheriff Ron Cramer says general increases, like wages and insurance costs, are mostly to blame for the deficit. Also contributing to the shortfall is the addition of a forensic investigator.

The Sheriff says the new position will mean fewer deputies will have to be taken off the streets to analyze evidence from crime scenes. Sheriff Cramer says they've already made cuts where they can, including the department's DARE and canine programs. He says next on the chopping block is six deputy sheriff positions, which equals one-third of the force.

"That would mean longer response times or self-reporting certain types of criminal activity or our patrolmen out there become just information takers. They would just go from call to call because of the amount of calls we do get in Eau Claire County," Sheriff Cramer says.

The Eau Claire County Committee on Finance and Budget is asking for citizens to weigh in on next year's budget by taking an online survey. The Committee plans to use the results to as one of their tools in developing the 2014 proposed budget.
