16 WI troops near end of Afghanistan deployment

MADISON (WKOW) -- Sixteen Wisconsin National Guards troops who have been training security forces in Afghanistan are nearing the end of their deployment.

The troops won't be back in the U.S. for a few more weeks, but they're starting to wrap up work that began in January.

The soldiers are part of the Guard's 104th Security Force Advise and Assist Team, or SFAAT. The team has been preparing Afghani troops for life after the U.S. military withdrawal.

The SFAAT has also been working with local residents. The team helped start a pair of 12-room schools and create a water well. The members also distributed school supplies to remote villages along the borders of Iran and Turkmenistan.

The Guard says the 16 troops could be home as early as next month.
