Winnebago County Exec will not run for governor

MADISON (WKOW) -- Winnebago County Executive Mark Harris will not run for governor unless two other potential democratic candidates bow out.

In a statement issued Friday, Harris called himself an under funded candidate.  He says he may still jump back into the race if former Trek executive Mary Burke and state Senator Kathleen Vinehout decide not run.

Harris, Burke and Vinehout, all Democrats, have been contemplating a run against Republican Governor Scott Walker next year.  Burke has not yet made an announcement on the race and Vinehout will make her decision next year.

Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate threw his support behind Burke earlier this week, saying she would be the front-runner in a primary.

Joe Fadness, Wisconsin Republican Party Executive Director, stated Harris' decision wasn't a surprise because Democrats chose Burke long ago.
