Independence man faces homicide charges in texting while driving crash

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Investigators say texting while driving played a role in a deadly crash and now a western Wisconsin man faces a homicide charge.

Police say Timothy A. Peterson, of Independence, told police it was possible he was texting when he hit and killed 86-year-old Cecelia Killian. She was crossing a street in Independence in January when she was struck.

Detectives say a search of his phone showed that Peterson replied to a text message from his mother at about the same time as the crash. They also say 20 minutes earlier, Peterson sent a text to a woman that said "drivin and textin not workin so good.'' The woman responded "drive careful," to which Peterson replied with a winking face icon.

Peterson is charged with homicide by negligent driving.
