UW-Madison students welcomed by new chancellor Friday

MADISON (WKOW) -- UW-Madison's Chancellor Rebecca Blank spoke to the incoming freshman class and transfer students Friday in her first major public event since getting the new job.

Blank officially welcomed the students at the Kohl Center.

Blank said the university is proud to have this class be one of the most ethnically diverse classes its ever had.

"Despite all these different backgrounds, you now share a common identity as Badgers, one that will connect you for the rest of your lives," Blank said. "You are students, in a few years you're going to become alumni of one of the greatest universities in the world."

Blank also took the time to give some advice to the new students.

"Take advantage of this incredibly diverse community," Blank said. "It is a little scary to find yourself, just one person in the midst of 7,000 new students, but if you really want to use this experience to its fullest, spend these first few months getting to know the people around you, no matter how different they seem when you first meet them."

Blank comes to Madison from the Obama administration, where she was acting U.S. Commerce Secretary.
