Fire at multi-unit apartment in Altoona

A fire at a multi-unit home is extinguished without any injuries. Altoona Fire Department was called to house fire on the 1500 block of Spooner Avenue around 5:00 p.m.

When crews first arrived they noticed smoke coming out of the front door on the first floor of the house. The fire was on the second story in the rear of the house. The fire was visible from the outside. When they got inside, the resident of the apartment was inside, trying to put out the fire with water. They cleared the resident from the apartment and were able to extinguish the rest of the flames.

"We haven't determined a cause for sure yet but we suspect that is smoking materials that were smoldering and caught a chair on fire and possibly climbed up the side of the building," Altoona Fire Captain Shawn Loegering says.

The Fire Department says the damage is mostly on the exterior of the building. The siding was melted around the door. The wood frame and attached deck were also damaged.
