Dane County schools spend $3M on security upgrades

Posted:

MADISON (AP) -- Public schools in Dane County have spent nearly $3 million on security upgrades over the summer. That continues a trend that started almost 15 years ago following the school shooting in Columbine, Colo.

A Wisconsin State Journal report says even the smallest rural schools will have secure entrances when classes start this week.

Districts in Sun Prairie and elsewhere spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to reconfigure entrances. Now visitors walk directly into an office or locked vestibule before they're let into the main building.

In Waunakee, school entrances now have intercoms, buzzers and cameras.

School officials say many of the upgrades have been in the works for more than a year. But they say every time there's a school tragedy in the U.S., it increases the local sense of urgency.
