"Rally to Improve Birth" in Madison Monday

MADISON (WKOW) -- Dozens gathered at James Madison Park on Monday for a rally calling attention to improving maternity care in the U.S.

Those in Madison stood with thousands of people across the country. It was part of the second annual "Rally to Improve Birth".

Organizers say they want to bring attention to the crisis in maternal healthcare in the U.S.

"The major issue is that in the U.S., we spend more for birth than any other country in the world, yet we are 45th in terms of outcomes," Cara Coburn Faris, a rally organizer, said. "And that is just unacceptable."

Organizers say nine out of 10 women receive care that increases, rather than decreases, the risks of harm to them and their babies.

"We have the costliest per birth system in the world and a large portion of that cost is due to the fact that women are having surgeries."
