Family with quintuplets unites in Madison

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Vanderwall family of Madison is finally intact in its home city: Mom, Dad and quintuplets.

Cassie Vanderwall gave birth to children Bella, Ellie, Theodore, Lillian and Kali Aug. 3 in Arizona. Vanderwall says she traveled there to have the delivery performed by a physician with a national reputation for handling quintuplet births, after she developed complications during her pregnancy.

Father Frank Vanderwall visited his wife and new borns periodically during the past month, as the children were cared for after being born nearly three months premature. But Vanderwall largely remained here and worked at his job with a Madison advertising firm, beginning the remodel and rearrangement of the family's three bedroom home.

Vanderwall remembers when the couple learned early in the pregnancy quintuplets were on the way.

"As they were scanning the ultrasound, it was one, there's two, three, four, five. (I thought) 'What is going on here?' "

The Vanderwall children are now in the neo-natal intensive care unit of Meriter Hospital. The couple expects the babies to be discharged in about a month, after they gain weight and develop.

Cassie Vanderwall, a staff member at UW Health working with nutrition programs, says the outpouring of help for her suddenly, large family has been incredible.

"Everyone from new friends, old friends, to church family, our immediate families, our parents, you name it, everyone just seems to be coming out of the woodwork to support us," Vanderwall tells 27 News.  "We're just forever grateful for that."
