Parents emphasize safety as children return to the bus stop

WAUSAU (WKOW) -- It's back to school this week and parents are working to prepare their kids for the big day.

Safety is one of the biggest concerns for children headed out to the bus in the morning. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation reminds parents to talk to children about looking both ways before crossing a street and recognizing street signs.

Experts say parents should make sure their children have a buddy to walk with, to school or the bus stop. When biking, the DOT says children should always wear a helmet and know the rules of the road.

"Stranger danger is huge, looking both ways before you cross the street, we kind of have a school that's in the center of town so it's really important that we follow the crossing guards, and follow directions, and making sure that we're listening to the adults around us," says Holly Spurlin, a parent.

The DOT says children should stand at least three big steps away from the curb while waiting to be picked up by the bus and cross in front of the bus.
