New push against State Street crime

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- A portion of State Street near Capitol Square is gaining the attention of police and city leaders due to increased criminal activity there, including drug dealing and fighting.  Last Tuesday, police reported both a stabbing and battery there.

Mayor Paul Soglin says he's working with law enforcement and other city agencies to craft a plan to fight the escalating trouble.

Soglin is expected to present that plan, calling for an increased police presence and possibly a space redesign, Tuesday at the regular Madison city council meeting.

Changes in design and enforcement could be included in the 2014 budget.
