Soglin unveils details of 2014 Capital budget

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Mayor Paul Soglin says the 2014 Capital Budget is the largest he's ever submitted -- $225 million.

Almost half of that total is going to pay off debt.

Soglin says that's forcing him to push back spending on some of his top priorities, like neighborhood centers and some energy sustainability projects.

"I think it's a fairly tight budget, but at the same time gives us the opportunity to grow and expand. And in terms of equity, it's a budget that's gonna be of benefit for all of Madison," Soglin said while releasing budget details on Tuesday.

Here's a look at some of the mayor's larger spending proposals for 2014:

  • $13.9 million for a new fire administration building and remodel of Fire Station 1
  • $1.2 million for the acquisition of a site for a Midtown Police District Station
  • $2.25 million for renovations and improvements at Monona Terrace
  • More than $18 million on major street projects, including work on County Highway M ($7.5 million) and East Johnson St. ($7.1 million)
