Ohio man who held 3 women captive commits suicide

COLUMBUS, OHIO (WKOW) – Ohio corrections officials say the man who held three women captive for nearly a decade has committed suicide at a state prison.

Spokeswoman JoEllen Smith says 53-year-old Ariel Castro was found hanging in his cell on Tuesday around 9:20 p.m. at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient.  Officials say prison medical staff performed CPR on Castro before transporting him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Three women, who disappeared as teenagers between 2002 and 2004, escaped May 6 when one of them broke part of a door and yelled for help.  Authorities arrested Castro that evening.

On August 1, Castro was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years on his guilty plea to 937 counts including kidnapping and rape.
