Wisconsin crews help fight West fires

MADISON (WKOW) -- There are currently more than 20 big wildfires burning in the western U.S., down from 60 just a few weeks ago.

And, a record number of Wisconsin crews are helping to fight them.

The DNR has sent out seven, 20 person crews so far this summer.

Those firefighters commit to spend at least two weeks out west.

"They're a mix of beginning firefighters and also seasoned firefighters, maybe some chainsaw people and some other specialists too to help out whatever the crew needs to do," said DNR Forestry team leader John Lubbers.

Along with fire crews, the state has also sent out more than 30 individuals this summer who are trained for specific duties related to fighting forest fires.
