Prairie du Sac woman celebrates 100th birthday

PRAIRIE DU SAC (WKOW) -- A Prairie du Sac woman celebrates her 100th birthday this year.

Ruth Bawden has lived a long life and that's why her family held a special birthday party to celebrate her achievements.

Ruth's family says she's full of joy and laughter. Ruth was born in 1913 and has lived through monumental moments in our country's history. Ruth says it's family support that has kept her alive and well for the past 100 years.

Ruth grew up on a farm.

"I would milk cows, harness horses and hitch up horses, "said Ruth Bawden. "Ask me and I'll do it!"

Ruth also helped to prepare meals on the farm for her working family.

"Cooking on the farm was good. If people were hungry you make something for them to eat," said Bawden.

Ruth rides her indoor bicycle and enjoys playing the piano. She was 24 years old when she was married and spent her life as a rural school teacher in Wisconsin.

"We could go and build a fire in the morning when it was cold as ice," said Bawden. "You had to build a fire every morning."

Governor Scott Walker's office sent Ruth a special birthday card, which is now hanging on the family's living room wall.
