Students enrolled at area schools through voucher program

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The two local schools chosen for an expanded state program now know how many voucher students they have.

Regis Catholic Schools has 37 voucher students enrolled. McDonell Area Catholic Schools has 28.

That's 65 of the 500 vouchers available statewide. The program was expanded under the new state budget. It allows for taxpayer money to be used to pay for students to go to a private school.

WQOW News 18 asked both schools how many voucher students were already in their system, but because of confidentiality concerns, they said they could not release that information.

McDonell actually had 30 students who were chosen, but two did not enroll. A spokesperson says that was because families had to make a decision in such a short period of time. They believe families will be given more time next year.
