Three children injured in crash, state patrol says driver was drunk

Burnett County (WQOW) - Two babies have life-threatening injuries after a crash in Burnett County and state patrol says the driver was drunk.

The crash happened last evening on highway 70 near Siren, in Burnett County. According to state patrol, the three children were in a car driven by a woman when she lost control and slid into a ditch, hitting a tree.

The children, a three-year-old and two one month old twins, were in the backseat buckled in their car seats.

The state patrol says the three children and the driver, Jennifer Smith, were all taken to the Spooner Hospital.

The infants were then transported to a Minnesota hospital with life threatening injuries. They were later taken to Gillette Children's Hospital. There is no update on their condition at this time.

According to the state patrol, the injuries of the three-year-old and Smith are not life threatening. The state patrol could not say if Smith was the mother of the children but did say they all have the same last name. Smith's address is listed as Naples, FL. 

Smith was ticketed for causing injuries by intoxicated driving. Charges are pending at this time.

Press Release (WI State Patrol) - At 5:58 PM on Friday September 06, 2013 a crash occurred on WIS 70 WB at Triangle Ln in BURNETT County near SIREN.

Assisting agencies included Burnett County Sheriff, St Croix Tribal Fire Department, and Burnett
County Highway Department.

The crash involved 4 injuries. Vehicle and occupant information, if available, is on attached page(s).

The details of the crash are as follows:On Friday, September 6, 2013, at 5:58 p.m., the WI State Patrol received a report of a one vehicle crash on STH-70 near Triangle Lane in Burnett County, Dewey Township. A 2002 Chevrolet was traveling westbound at that location. The driver lost control, slid into the ditch, and struck a large tree. Three children riding in the rear seat received unspecified injuries. The children were 3 years of age and two other children were 1 month old. All children were in child safety seats.

The driver received unspecified injuries. All occupants were transported to Spooner Hospital. Both infants were subsequently airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN. Alcohol was a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation. Charges are pending.
