Deputy shot in Taylor County released from hospital

Taylor County (WQOW)- Deputy Chad Kowalczyk will begin the long road to recovery. He was released from the hospital Sunday afternoon, a week after being shot. 

He is the nephew of Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk, who says the deputy was shot in the stomach with a .22 caliber bullet. Upon leaving a Wausau hospital Deputy Kowalczyk will being a long recovery process. He relays a sincere thanks to everyone who has offered encouragement and concern over the past week. 

The sheriff's department says Alexander Schneider ran from the scene and was later caught. He is now in jail for the shooting. 

Investigators say the incident began on the night of September 8th when Deputy Kowalczyk responded to a report that Schneider was violating a court-ordered injunction. Detectives say Deputy Kowalczyk came under fire and reported to dispatch that he was injured. Eight law enforcement agencies, including Eau Claire County's SWAT Team, responded to the scene. 

A check of online court records shows Schneider was charged earlier this summer with sexual assault of a child, intimidating a victim, battery and recklessly endangering safety.

The sheriff's department says Alexander Schneider ran from the scene and was caught about three hours later. He is now in jail for the shooting.

UPDATE: TAYLOR COUNTY (WQOW) - The Taylor County deputy injured during an incident in Westboro has been identified as Chad R. Kowalczyk, a 5-year veteran.  He is currently being treated at an area hospital.

The suspect taken into custody is Alexander Joseph Schneider, 27, and is currently being held at this time. He is a Taylor County resident.

No further information is being released at this time. The incident remains under
investigation.

TAYLOR COUNTY (WQOW) -- Investigators in Taylor County say a 27-year-old man is in custody after shooting a sheriff's deputy.

The male deputy was airlifted to the hospital. There's no word on his condition.

According to the Taylor County Sheriff's Department, they responded to a home in Westboro around 6:30 Sunday night after reports that the suspect had violated a court order.

That's when they say the standoff started. Officials say the suspect shot a deputy during the standoff then ran from the scene.

People who live in the neighborhood were told to stay inside of their homes. The alleged shooter was caught about three hours later.

No one else was hurt in the incident. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded, including Eau Claire County's tactical team.

Investigators haven't revealed how or why the standoff started. They also haven't said where the deputy was shot -- or what hospital he's in. But say they'll release more information Monday.
