Woodman’s Food Market signs Altoona deal

Altoona (Press Release) - City of Altoona officials were notified that Access Commercial Real Estate, owners of 40 acres in the southwest quadrant of River Prairie, reached a tentative agreement with Woodman's Food Market, Inc. for purchasing and developing the entire 40 acre parcel.

Woodman's is an employee owned and operated company and one of a handful of surviving independent food retailers in the state of Wisconsin. Woodman's started out as a corner grocery store in Janesville in 1918, and Woodman's currently owns and operates 15 food merchandising centers throughout Wisconsin and Illinois.

"Woodman's represents one of the final pieces of the River Prairie development puzzle," commented Altoona Mayor Jack Blackburn. "Woodman's will be a great retail anchor, generating approximately 30,000 (or more) visits per week that will further drive development in the northwest quadrant toward realizing the community's vision of a vibrant mixed use development."

Pending receipt of all necessary approvals, Woodman's is proposing to construct an approximately 240,000 square foot food store that will include approximately 150,000 square feet of retail space and 90,000 square feet of warehousing space. Woodman's will employ approximately 200 workers at this location.

Woodman's plans to base its River Prairie store architecture on its recently completed Sun Prairie store.

"It is clear that Woodman's put a lot of effort into building a beautiful store that resulted in a facility that is aesthetically pleasing inside and out," commented Council PresidentRay Henning after a recent trip to the store. "I believe it will provide a great centerpiece for the retail portion of the River Prairie Development."

In addition to the "every-day low pricing" that Woodman's will offer on the 65,000 – 70,000
items in its grocery store, they also will offer an extensive liquor inventory and are proposing to
construct and operate a gas station that will include a small convenience store, quick-lube
services and a car wash center on the River Prairie site.
