Search for new police chief is on in Eau Claire

Eau Claire (WQOW)- The Eau Claire Police Department is looking for a new police chief and it could make that decision sooner than most would expect.

Police Chief Jerry Matysik's last day on the job will be October 11th. The department expects to name an interim replacement soon.  Sometimes interim candidates aren't allowed to apply for the permanent position, but in this case, they can.  A national search will take place to find the permanent police chief and the city plans to have someone hired before the end of this year.

"They will appoint an interim chief by mid September and they hope to complete the interview process by mid November," explains Eau Claire County Human Resources Director Dale Peters.

The Eau Claire Police and Fire Commission says it is looking at senior staff members for the interim position. All applications for the permanent job are due by October 9th.
