Bill proposed to require seat belts on new school buses

MADISON (WKOW) -- A state Democratic senator wants all new school buses to have seat belts.

Senator Tim Cullen of Janesville introduced a bill to do just that, plus it would require all passengers on school buses to wear seat belts.

"The fact that we are required to wear seat belts in cars, yet allow our children to roll down the road at 55 miles per hour without them is completely outrageous to me," Cullen said in a news release.

Cullen says it's similar to a policy he ushered in while working on the Janesville School Board. That policy took effect in 2009.

Old buses would not have to be retrofitted.
