Grocery store in Plain reopens as food co-op

PLAIN (WKOW) -- Residents in the small town of Plain, Wisconsin come together to build a co-op.

The lone grocery store open for 100 years recently closed and now the community wants to keep the tradition alive. The owners of Phil's Grocery Store didn't want to run the store anymore, but the community didn't want the establishment to completely close.

The community of Plain, which is about one hour north west of Madison, came together to start the Honey Creek Market Co-op.

The store is managed by a board and members were decided last week. The new store manager, Tegan Krueger, says it's great to see the community come together to open this new business. She says the difference between a regular store and a co-op is that regular stores are locked into what they have to sell. Honey Creek Market takes suggestions from its customers on what products they want to see.

"Our local meats and our local produce is a big thing," says Krueger.

The Honey Creek Market opened its doors about three weeks ago. It's located at the corner of Alma and Main Streets in Plain.
