Sen. Baldwin weighs in on Syria

MADISON (WKOW) -- While the federal government continues to work toward a diplomatic solution in Syria, Wisconsin's congressional delegation continues to oppose any kind of military action.

"I cannot support unilateral military action in Syria's war, but I believe we have to have a global response," Wisconsin Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin said on CNN's New Day Thursday morning. "I don't think no response is the answer. I think we have to strengthen our global institutions and create the capability to act."

Secretary of State John Kerry is in Geneva, Switzerland for two days of talks with Russia's foreign minister. They're trying to work out an agreement to disarm Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons.

Sen. Baldwin emphasized how important these discussions are Thursday.

"In the past few days, a new path developed that we have to, in a determined fashion, walk down," Sen. Baldwin said. "And that path does not involve the use of unilateral military force against Syria, that's long been engaged in a civil war. It doesn't involve us in that war. And that path is very important because it engages the international community."

On Wednesday, Republican Congressman Paul Ryan said he opposes military action, saying it would damage the United States' credibility.
