PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville football team moved up to ninth from its preseason ranking of 11th in the D3football.com top-25 poll.
The Pioneers are now the highest ranked school in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with UW-Oshkosh moving up to No. 10 and UW-Whitewater dropping to 14th.
"I think it kind of gives us some extra attention," said senior defensive lineman Mike Gabbey. "I think it kind of gives us a chip on our shoulders because we don't want to be the team that goes out and under performs. That's just what people think we're going to do, but obviously we want to be even better than that. We want to win a national championship."
UW-Platteville opened the 2013 season on Sept.7 with a comfortable 42-17 victory over Buena Vista.
"I think we have a great foundation," said head coach Mike Emendorfer. "It's taken a while to build the program up, but we're still chasing the dream. We haven't achieved our ultimate dream which is to win the conference and compete at the national level. A lot of people are projecting us to do that this year, but we're just going to take it one game at a time. But I like our chances, I like this team, and if we keep playing well, I feel it'll be an exciting November."
The Pioneers will travel to Dubuque on Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. for the "Battle of the Bridge" sponsored by the Dairy Queen of Platteville.
