Man accused of setting wife on fire gets 225-day jail sentence

MADISON (WKOW) -- The man accused of setting his wife on fire last year in Madison received a 225-day jail sentence Friday morning in Dane County court.

Sixty-year-old Andrew Spear pleaded guilty to six misdemeanors in July, in exchange for prosecutors dropping an attempted homicide charge.

The sentences are for charges of battery, disorderly conduct, domestic abuse and criminal damage to property.

Court records list the sentences "with huber", meaning Spear is eligible for work release.

Authorities say Spear poured gasoline on his wife, Mary Spear, and set the fire, causing her to receive minor burns.

At the time of the crimes, Mary Spear was chief legal counsel to then-state health secretary Dennis Smith.
