Milwaukee archdiocese settlement plans upset victims

Posted:

MILWAUKEE (WKOW)  -- The Archdiocese of Milwaukee plans for a settlement that would fast-track a decision for its long-running bankruptcy case, but lawyers say victims are not happy.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says lawyers for sex-abuse victims object the plans.  Attorneys say any settlement talks must include these victims who have claims against the church.

The archdiocese asked a judge to stay the lawsuit against insurance companies for 60 days.  Those 60 days would allow parties to enter mediation.

Victims' attorneys oppose the hold because they want to the case to move forward.  In addition, the lawyers are concerned the archdiocese and insurance companies could agree on a low settlement figure if the victims are denied input.

Archdiocese spokesperson Jerry Topczewski says the church is committed to moving the bankruptcy forward.
