UWPD lieutenant promoted to SIU

CARBONDALE, IL (WKOW) -- UW-Madison Police Officer Benjamin Newman has been promoted to the new chief of public safety at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

SIU's chancellor, Rita Cheng, stated that Newman has "highly relevant experience as a police officer and administrator on a large, complex campus."

Newman began at UWPD in 1999 as an officer and evidence technician. He was then promoted to sergeant in 2003 and a lieutenant in 2008. His new job at SIU will involve managing policy development and implementation, supervising personnel, overseeing aspects of the budget, and conducting training and investigations for the department.

Newman will be the successor to Todd Sigler, who is retiring after 30 years at SIU.
